Tortyr Bonanza!

Jag har precis upptäckt att Storbritanniens fd. ambassadör till Uzbekistan, Craig Murray, har startat en egen blog där han skriver om hur Storbtitannien och USA förlitar sig på tortyr i sitt korståg för "demokrati". Förutom att de själv torterar, så outsourcar de även tortyr till pålitliga diktaturer, vilket varit känt sedan länge.

Ett vanligt argument från den blodtörstiga högern är att tortyr kan vara nödvändigt för att rädda liv. För att kunna leva med den åsikten kanske man ska ha sig klart för vad tortyr är. Som Murray skriver:

And I will tell you what torture means.

It means the woman who was raped with a broken bottle in both vagina and anus, and who died after ten days of agony. It means the old man suspended by wrist shackles from the ceiling while his children were beaten to a pulp before his eyes. It means the man whose fingernails were pulled before his face was beaten and he was immersed to his armpits in boiling liquid.

It means the 18-year-old whose knees and elbows were smashed, his hand immersed in boiling liquid until the skin came away and the flesh started to peel from the bone, before the back of his skull was stove in.

These are all real cases from the Uzbek security services which we viewed as friendly liaison, and from which we obtained regular intelligence, in the Uzbek case via the CIA.

Det är alltså det här som våra vänner på den högra sidan av den politiska skalan försvarar eller blundar för. Förhoppningsvis är de inte i majoritet.

Murray har nyligen slängt in en näve stenar i det politiska getingbot genom att publicera hemliga dokument på sin hemsida, som visar hur den brittiska regeringen har ljugit om sin inblandning i tortyr.

Jack Straw sade i april 2005:

We do not support the obtaining of intelligence by torture, or its use.

Följande står det i ett av dokumenten som Murray publicerade:

We receive intelligence obtained under torture from the Uzbek intelligence services, via the US. We should stop. It is bad information anyway. Tortured dupes are forced to sign up to confessions showing what the Uzbek government wants the US and UK to believe, that they and we are fighting the same war against terror.

I understand that the meeting decided to continue to obtain the Uzbek torture material. I understand that the principal argument deployed was that the intelligence material disguises the precise source, ie it does not ordinarily reveal the name of the individual who is tortured. Indeed this is true – the material is marked with a euphemism such as "From detainee debriefing." The argument runs that if the individual is not named, we cannot prove that he was tortured.

De brittiska myndigheterna var alltså fullt medvetna om tortyren, och gjorde sitt bästa för att dölja det. En cover up.

Som en liten notis, så skriver Guardian idag om hur officerare från MI6 närvarade vid ett "förhör" i Grekland, då 28 Pakistanier greps och misshandlades. Jack Straw har tidigare kallat anklagelserna för att vara "fabricerade" och "utter nonsense". Men idag så erkänner alltså tjänstemän att brittiska agenter trots allt var närvarande, dock endast som "observatörer", en bekväm undanflykt.

Hyckleri, var ordet.
